Storage Sydenham Health and Safety Policy
Storage Sydenham is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for employees, customers, contractors and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to identifying, managing and reducing risks associated with storage, removals, handling and related activities at our premises and within our operational service area.
We recognise that effective health and safety management is an integral part of our overall business performance. We aim to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and harm to the environment by maintaining high standards and continually improving our practices.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to:
Promote a positive health and safety culture throughout Storage Sydenham. Provide safe and suitable storage, access routes and handling areas. Reduce the risk of accidents and work-related ill health associated with removals, lifting and vehicle movements. Ensure that all activities are planned and conducted with proper regard for safety. Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised best practice. Involve employees in the development and improvement of safe systems of work.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Storage Sydenham has overall responsibility for the implementation of this policy. Management will:
Provide clear leadership on health and safety matters. Allocate appropriate resources for safety equipment, training and maintenance. Ensure that risk assessments are carried out, recorded, implemented and reviewed. Establish, maintain and monitor safe systems of work for storage and removals. Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses and act on the findings. Review this policy regularly and update it when necessary.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy. They must ensure that employees and contractors understand and follow the safety procedures that apply to their work.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Employees are required to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow all health and safety instructions, procedures and training provided. Use equipment, vehicles and materials in accordance with guidance and instructions. Report hazards, defects, near misses and accidents without delay. Co operate with management in the implementation of this policy and any related procedures. Refrain from misusing or interfering with anything provided in the interests of health, safety and welfare.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Storage Sydenham carries out regular and systematic risk assessments covering all relevant activities, including but not limited to:
Storage of goods and materials. Manual handling, including lifting, carrying and stacking. Use of trolleys, lifting equipment and vehicles. Loading and unloading during removals and deliveries. Access to units, corridors, stairways and external areas. Fire safety and emergency evacuation.
Where significant risks are identified, appropriate control measures are implemented. These may include changes to layout, provision of equipment, revised procedures, training, signage or protective measures. Safe systems of work are communicated clearly to employees and, where relevant, to contractors and customers.
Manual Handling and Removals Safety
Given the nature of storage and removal services, particular attention is paid to manual handling and the movement of goods. Storage Sydenham will:
Provide guidance and training on safe lifting techniques and team lifting. Ensure that suitable handling aids such as trolleys and dollies are available and maintained. Plan removal and loading tasks to minimise unnecessary lifting and carrying. Assess the weight, size and stability of items before moving them. Avoid tasks that present an unacceptable risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Employees and contractors involved in removals or handling activities must follow all handling instructions and must not attempt to move items that are beyond their capability or outside agreed safe systems of work.
Vehicle and Traffic Management
To reduce the risk of accidents involving vehicles, Storage Sydenham implements measures to manage traffic on site. These may include:
Clearly defined vehicle routes and pedestrian walkways. Safe loading and unloading areas. Speed limits and directional signage. Procedures for reversing and manoeuvring larger vehicles.
Drivers, whether employees, contractors or customers, must follow all site rules, drive with due care and attention and respect any instructions provided by staff.
Workplace Environment and Housekeeping
Storage Sydenham aims to maintain clean, orderly and well maintained premises. We will:
Keep floors, corridors and access routes clear and free from obstructions. Ensure lighting is adequate in all work and storage areas. Maintain doors, locks, shutters and access controls in safe working order. Store items securely to prevent falls, collapse or damage. Manage waste safely and dispose of it using appropriate methods.
Employees are required to maintain good housekeeping standards within their work areas and to report any hazards or maintenance issues promptly.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Fire safety is a key priority in storage environments. Storage Sydenham will:
Provide and maintain suitable fire detection and firefighting equipment. Keep fire exits and escape routes clearly marked and unobstructed. Display clear emergency instructions and site plans where appropriate. Carry out regular fire risk assessments and act on the findings. Provide staff with information and training on emergency procedures.
All persons on site must familiarise themselves with emergency exits and follow the instructions of Storage Sydenham staff in the event of an alarm or evacuation.
Training, Information and Supervision
Storage Sydenham ensures that employees receive appropriate training and information to work safely. This includes:
Induction training for new starters, covering key health and safety topics. Role specific training for tasks such as removals, driving or operating equipment. Refresher training where necessary and when procedures change. Clear information about site rules, hazards and emergency arrangements.
Supervisors will monitor working practices and provide guidance and correction where required to ensure that safe systems of work are followed.
Contractors and Visitors
Contractors working on site are required to comply with this policy and any site specific rules that apply to their activities. Storage Sydenham will:
Provide contractors with relevant safety information. Check that contractors are competent for the tasks they undertake. Monitor contractor activities, especially where higher risk work is involved.
Visitors and customers will be given any necessary safety information and must follow all instructions given by Storage Sydenham staff.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Storage Sydenham values the input of employees in improving health and safety performance. We encourage staff to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safety. Lessons learned from incidents, near misses, audits and inspections are used to refine our policies and procedures.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains effective, relevant and aligned with current legislation and best practice for storage and removal services. The latest version of the policy is made available to all employees and interested parties.
